Maritime Sends Two Liberian Engineers for Advanced Training

(February 4, 2010) - Two Liberian cadets from the Bureau of Maritime Affairs left the country on February 3, 2010 on board a Firestone vessel, the D5ZA Harbel Cutlass for a 40-day study tour around the world.

The two BMA Staff, Messrs. Emmanuel M. Dolakeh and Daniel Tarr, work as Senior Communication Officers at the Monrovia Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRMRCC). Shortly before their departure, they expressed gratitude to the management and promised to do their best in order to bring back good results.

They were accompanied aboard the vessel by the Director of Training and Human Resource Development, Mr. James A. A. Morris and were received upon arrival at the ship by the Captain, Master Fan Shan-Rou. According to Mr. Morris, the Bureau of Maritime Affairs had signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Firestone Plantation Company to send two cadets at a given time to undergo ‘hand-on-deck study’ which includes practical experience.

Continuing, Mr. Morris said that there are two vessels that run between Liberia and the United States of America and the Bureau has arranged for two of our cadets to receive practical training and return to pave the way for other cadets to do likewise rotationally. Mr. Morris explained that the two cadets had graduated from the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Maritime Affairs. Mr. Morris further stated that “there is a need for practical seamen’s experience aboard other international vessels. That is why the Bureau has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Firestone for BMA employees to advance themselves and effectively serve the bureau and the government.

The latex dry cargo container carrier, the Harbel Cutlass, has a net tonnage of 4,326 and flies the Liberian flag with official No. 6772.The Vessel also has international ship security certificates No. 9HO-00ry ISSC, among others.
