Regional Maritime University

The Regional Maritime University (RMU), Ghana, formerly the Regional Maritime Academy, is an international tertiary institution established in 1983. The RMU attained "university" status on the 25th of October, 2007 when it was launched as such by its founding members: The Republics of Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Situated in Nungua, a suburb of Accra, Ghana, the RMU is a branch of the World Maritime University, in Malmo, Sweden and an affiliate of the University of Ghana, Legon. The University also has working relations with other universities in the sub-region.

The Board of Governors is the principal policy-making body of the RMU whose chairmanship is rotational among the five-member states. Currently, the Republic of The Gambia chairs the Board. They are guided by the vision that the University, "within the next decade, will be known and recognized as the tertiary institution of first choice in advanced maritime education and training, research and consultancy in Africa and beyond".

The University is dedicated to the continual development of human capital in the maritime industry, especially in the sub-region, and has trained thousands of personnel for the maritime and allied industries. Students attending the RMU can attain bachelor and master degrees in maritime related studies. The RMU has institutional accreditation from the Department of State for Education, The Gambia, and the National Accreditation Board, Ghana, for the running of its degree programs.

As the University is open to all – males and females, students from member and non-member countries, and students from Francophone and Anglophone countries – students are selected from diverse backgrounds and a range of countries.
