Liberia Maritime Human Resource Development Center

Currently, there is a shortage of trained seafarers in the global marketplace. As Liberia transitions into a leading 'Maritime Nation', the Liberia Maritime Authority is working to respond to the needs of its customers and the international marketplace by helping to fill this gap in human capacity. The Liberia Maritime Authority has re-opened the Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) renamed the Liberia Maritime Human resource Development Center(LiMAHRDC), which will provide a "Best in Class," high-quality program that produces seafarers with the requisite knowledge, skills, ability, and discipline needed worldwide.

Located in Marshall City, Margibi County, Liberia, the LMTI was initially established in 1979 bearing the name Union Marine Training Institute. It originally operated under the auspices of the Mano River Union comprising Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, until 1988 when the Liberian Government acquired its full ownership, management and operation. As with most other national institutions, LMTI experienced a forced closure throughout Liberia's fourteen-year civil war, and this consequently led to the deterioration of the Institute's infrastructure and training equipment.

Peace and Stability reclaimed in 2007, and the Center underwent a major restoration, renovation and new construction of the scenic campus sitting on 28.5 acre overlooking the Junk, Farmington, Du Rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, (including jetty, pier, hatch and living quarter) which were completed in 2009. The Training of Trainers program is complete and instructors have returned from the Regional Maritime University in Accra Ghana. Instructors are qualified global ex sea-going marine personnel with real-life experiences to share. They have all received intensive training in adult education techniques and high quality simulation operations, meeting all levels of learners' competency. The Center provides Cadet training administration services program, covers from recruitment to qualification as officer of the watch, meeting IMO Safety Standards of Training Certificate and Watch-Keeping (STCW), 1978, 1995.
